A Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) is an extreme wintertime circulation event in the Northern Hemisphere. There have been many technical definitions of SSW's proposed over the last 60 years, but none have been widely accepted. By using Persistent Homology to detect and categorize the shape of Polar Vortices, we introduce a new constant-free definition that uses a scale of intensity rather than a cut-off. This approach is very promising as it agrees with previous definitions when different intensities are considered.
