Prof. Fengyan Li has been selected as a Class of 2026 Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). The SIAM Fellows Program recognizes 25 members each year (0.2% of the total international membership) for outstanding research and service that advance the fields of applied mathematics, computational science, and data science. Dr. Li is being honored "for her contributions to structure-preserving discontinuous Galerkin methods and other schemes for hyperbolic equations, and for her professional service, including service to SIAM and to women in mathematics".
Dr. Li's research focuses on designing and analyzing highly accurate computational methods, particularly for wave propagation, fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and nonlinear optics. Her recent work centers on multiscale simulations and reduced-order modeling for kinetic transport problems, supported by the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Dr. Li is committed to promoting and supporting women and girls in mathematics through her active involvement with the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and her service on the steering committee of the Women in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing (WINASC) Research Network. She has mentored students for over a decade through the AWM Mentor Network and serves as faculty advisor for the AWM Student Chapter at RPI.
Dr. Li joins Prof. Mohammed Zaki, Head of Computer Science, as a SIAM Fellow recognized from RPI's School of Science.
