Fabian Faulstich Receives ACT CMS Fellowship to Develop Computational Quantum Course

Prof Fabian Faulstich has been selected as a member of the 2026 Class of ACT CMS Faculty Fellows to transform his course “Mathematical and Computational Foundations of Quantum Many Body Theory” into a fully integrated mathematical and computational learning experience translating theory into verified code.  This fellowship is offered by the Molecular Sciences Software Institute (MolSSI) with the aim of “Accelerating Curricular Transformation in the Computational Molecular Sciences (ACT CMS).”   The course being developed emphasizes hands-on engagement with software development, with students learning how algorithms are structured and verified, and how their implementation is influenced by numerical stability and scaling.  Besides a stipend, Dr. Faulstich will be engaged over this academic year with technical training workshops and networking events with other Faculty Fellows to provide guidance and feedback on his course design.

Dr. Faulstich is currently teaching and refining his course for graduate students and upper division undergraduate students in the Fall 2026 semester after a pilot run in Spring 2025.  A condensed version of the course was selected to be delivered by Dr. Faulstich in the Summer of 2025 at the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation affiliated with the University of Chicago.  The course was tested and assessed in Spring 2026 by a different professor at the RWTH Aachen, a top technical university in Germany.  An end goal of the Fellowship is for Dr. Faulstich to develop and package the course into an openly licensed curriculum that can be adopted at other universities either as a complete course or as computational modules to be integrated into existing theoretical courses on quantum physics or quantum chemistry.
